5 Ways to Get Your Roof Ready for Spring

April 27, 2022

Spring is the best time to get your roof in shape!

Spring is the best time for preparing your roof for the rest of the year. Why? Because roof work is easier in cooler weather, but it may not be cool enough in Richmond for the job for much longer!Besides, doing a Spring inspection and tuneup allows you to find and fix any damage caused by winter storms before Summer’s heat has a chance to do further damage.

Check for loose shingles.

The first and most obvious thing to check for is loose shingles. If you can see missing shingles from the ground, that’s not a good sign. If you have access to your rooftop, and can safely access it, start by checking the roofline and moving up looking for any loose or missing shingles. To err on the side of caution, we always suggest using a set of binoculars, a drone, or calling in a professional to check your roof!

If you find any loose shingles, be sure to give Tredegar Construction a call, so we can help you solve the issue!

It may be tempting to try to repair large sections of missing shingles yourself; after all, how hard could it be? But only professionals should tackle projects like this because they understand how crucial correct placement is to preventing leaks in your roof later down the road when it rains again!

Clean and re-seal around the chimney.

Once your chimney has been cleaned in its yearly clean by a professional, you will want to inspect the chimney itself and its surrounding area. You will want to look for cracking or holes in the mortar, as well as loose metal flashing or missing shingles. If any of the sealant for the chimney flashing appears cracked, brittle, or is no longer adhering to the chimney, then it needs to be repaired.

Inspect your gutters.

You should also check your gutters and downspouts for any loose, rusting, or missing sections. If you've got a leaky gutter, it could be coming from a few different places. Look for cracks in the seams of the aluminum or rust spots on older steel gutters. If it's obvious that it's time to replace the gutters, reach out to us at Tredegar Construction,we can show you how new gutters and gutter guards can change how your house looks and functions!

Clean out downspouts

One of the most important things you can do to get your roof ready for spring is clean out gutters and downspouts. Cleaning out gutters and downspouts is important because doing so will prevent water from pooling on top of your roof, possibly causing leaks.

Gutters can get clogged with debris and may need cleaning several times a year, especially in the spring. You can grab a ladder and place it against the house, or if you have a two-story roof or higher, you may want to consult with a professional cleaner. Want to skip cleaning altogether? Call Tredegar Construction today to see how we can install gutter guards on your home!

Trim trees and bushes.

Another extremely important thing you need to do is make sure that all trees on your property are trimmed away from the building. It's a good idea to trim back any branches that come close enough to touch the building so that they don't scratch up the siding when they blow in the wind. Trimming trees can also help prevent the build-up of debris and leaves which can cause lots of problems unless cleaned regularly.
